Alaskans ‘Get A Taste’ Of Construction ‘With Free’ Hands-On Training
Ian Stewart at Your Alaska Link is at the Alaska Laborers Training School where hands-on training is the name of the game. Throughout a week-long program, students gain practical experience in placing, forming and finishing concrete, as well as scaffold building. This program is made possible through a collaboration between the Alaska Laborers Training School and the Alaska Works Partnership. Designed as a Pre-Apprenticeship Program, it gives participants a taste of what the industry is like. "They're not part of the Union and haven't joined the Apprenticeship (Program) yet," explained Instructor John Buck. "This is just to see if they even want to do it before they go through all the paperwork, signing up and boot camps."
