Unionized Theater Ushers In Philadelphia ‘Reject’ Management Proposal, ‘Prepare To Strike This Week’
Unionized Ushers are preparing to Strike if they can't reach an agreement on a new contract with Ensemble Arts Philly by Wednesday (January 15th). International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local B29, which represents about 100 Ushers, has authorized a Strike after rejecting the organization's latest proposal that was made on December 30th (2024). Non-profit Ensemble Arts manages performances from the Philadelphia Orchestra and others at venues, including the Kimmel Center, Academy of Music and Miller Theater. Local B29 is seeking higher wages, fair benefits contributions, more clearly defined job duties and language outlining Union Jurisdiction. “Front-of-house Workers are vital to the success of every performance,” IATSE International President Matthew Loeb. “Ushers are the first faces audiences see when they enter the venue, setting the tone for the entire experience. They deserve a contract that respects their contributions, meets their stated priorities and ensures Ushers’ service and professionalism are sustainable for individuals within the craft.”
