Virtual Reality Headsets ‘Transform’ Apprenticeship Training

J.T. Fetch at WRGB-TV in Schenectady reports virtual reality headsets, often associated with immersive home entertainment, are now being utilized to educate and train future Workers.  The Expertise Project collaborates with schools to engage students in careers and also works with companies to offer virtual tours of their projects.  These virtual experiences not only help companies build a training library for employees but also serve as a recruitment tool at career fairs, Officials said.  One of Expertise Project's founders, Dan O'Sullivan, emphasized that the showcased jobs often do not necessarily require a college degree: "A Welder, a Painter, a Machinist, whatever it is.  As soon as they start to talk you realize they're making money beyond paying the rent.  We'll show you what the Apprenticeship Programs look like and then show you the actual work."  The virtual reality headsets provide a glimpse into various locations, including a New York State Department of Transportation construction site, a graphics facility in Saratoga Springs and a lumber yard in Ballston Spa.
