Organized Labor & Business Ask New York State For $100 Million To Connect Migrants To Jobs

Raga Justin at The Albany Times Union reports a coalition of Organized Labor, business and immigration is seeking to persuade New York officials to invest $100 million in support of career development for Migrant Workers, a move it says will shore up industries with critical shortages and also protect the economic viability of the State as an undefined “mass deportation” looms.  The Ellis Island Initiative was launched in 2023 with a group of partners including the Business Council of New York State, the AFL-CIO and Faith-Based Organizations.  It is aimed at connecting open jobs with the more than 100,000 people who have arrived in New York over the past two years, many of them seeking asylum or permanent residency in the United States. Organizers view it as a way to connect the people who have come to the U.S. in search of economic opportunity with the New York businesses that need Workers.  Leaders point to a labor shortage of nearly 500,000 openings in New York, in industries that have experienced difficulties recruiting and retaining Workers.
