Staff at Street Roots, a non-profit in Portland, Oregon who publish an award-winning weekly newspaper focused on poverty and social justice, have announced their intent to join Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 7901. The 15 eligible Staff Members voted unanimously in favor of forming the Street Roots Workers Guild, looking to secure voluntary recognition from management. While the Street Roots Board failed to meet its deadline of acknowledging the Unit in early December, Workers are undeterred and report that CWA has already filed its petition for an election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).  “In its twenty-five years, Street Roots has been a place to exchange ideas, create lasting solutions to shared challenges, and generate income opportunities alongside people most impacted by social injustices.  We deeply believe in that mission,” Street Roots Workers Guild Members said in a letter sent to the organization’s Board of Directors. “We believe a Union will strengthen Street Roots by democratizing processes directly impacting our workplace and community.”
