Nevada Grad Students Seek To ‘Go Union’ With The United Auto Workers
Graduate Assistants (GAs) have delivered letters to Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Administrators, informing them that a super-majority of GAs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and the Desert Research Institute have signed cards to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) Union. GAs launched the effort to form the Nevada Graduate Student Workers-UAW (NGSW-UAW) in order to correct large pay discrepancies throughout departments, ensure equitable pay and protect themselves from workplace harassment. Now that they have amassed Union Authorization Cards from 65% of GAs, Workers are pressing university leaders and the Nevada System of Higher Education to recognize them and start the bargaining process. “As a Graduate Worker, I believe forming a Union is essential for ensuring fair wages and improved working conditions,” said Ibtihaj Ahmad, a GA in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction at UNLV. “We deserve a voice in decisions that affect our work and well-being, and a Union will provide the support we need to advocate for ourselves.”
