New Ironworkers Local 549 Training Center In Wheeling, West Virginia ‘Aims To Expand’ Apprenticeship Opportunities

Claire O'Neil at WTOV Steubenville reports from Wheeling that Ironworkers Local 549 - chartered back in 1937 and representing more than 353 Active Members, has received a large grant that’s expected to help out the Union in multiple ways.  Local 549 was able to match funds with the Appalachian Regional Commission for a grant they say they applied for - but were surprised to get.  "We are very excited about it because it’s going to open up a lot of new pathways for us,” Local 549 Business Manager Kevin Coulter said.  Those pathways include creating a brand-new Training Facility that’s an extension of the current building in Wheeling.  It will be a two-story structure that will provide the opportunity to expand upon the Union’s Apprenticeship Programs with more classrooms.  "We'll have more stations to train them, we'll be able to train up to (90) Apprentices,” Coulter said.
