Hispanics United of Buffalo Workers ‘Goes Union,’ Joins 1199 SEIU - Direct Service Workers ‘Among Growing Local & National Trend As Workers Join Labor Unions To Demand Improvements In Their Workplace & A Voice On The Job’

(BUFFALO, NEW YORK) - Direct Service Workers employed at Hispanics United of Buffalo (Hispanos Unidos de Buffalo), an affiliate of Acacia Network followed a national rising trend and unanimously voted in favor of joining a Labor Union this week.

About 31 Workers at Hispanics United of Buffalo voted to join 1199 Service Employees International Union (SEIU) United Healthcare Workers East, the largest Health Care Workers’ Union in the U.S.

Hispanos Unidos de Buffalo is a non-profit organization that provides direct care and social services to at-risk communities across Western New York.

The newly organized Workers at Hispanos Unidos de Buffalo are employed as Care Coordinators, Senior Case Managers, Receptionists, in Quality Control, as Quality Control Assistants, Residential Aides, Pantry Assistants, Service Workers, Education and Employment Specialists, Billers, Housing Specialists, Drivers, Maintenance Workers and in Janitorial.

Workers will begin negotiating their first Union contract in the not too distant future.

“At least our voices will be heard now,” said Marianela Rodriguez, a Case Manager.  “Our Union will help us be even more successful at work.”

“Even as a full-time working mother it is difficult to meet my family’s financial needs,” said Alexandria Carlucci, a Care Coordinator.  “Now, with the support of a Union behind me, my compensation will start to reflect my labor.”

Hispanos Unidos de Buffalo is an affiliate of Acacia Network, a Latino-led organization providing services such as health, housing and social services.

Workers voted to join the Union alongside their colleagues from Acacia Network, who joined last year at Promesa, Incorporated Safepoint Lighthouse in Dunkirk and Alba de Vida Clinic in Buffalo.

1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers East, whose mission is to achieve quality care and good jobs for all, is the largest and fastest-growing Health Care Union in America - representing more than 400,000 Nurses and Caregivers throughout the States of Florida, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Maryland, and in Washington, D.C.
