Dallas Black Dance Theatre Performers ‘Fight For Their Union’
Rosemary Curts at LaborNotes reports on an effort by Dancers at the Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) to Unionize. A recently-held rally outside the Theatre drew 200 people in support of the entire 10-Member Primary Dance Company, who were fired less than three months after they voted to Unionize under the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA). The rally featured a drummer, line dancing and spontaneous performances from the Unionized Dancers. Hours before the Dancers’ termination, the DBDT called auditions for scab Dancers. Immediately, the AGMA issued a “do not work” order for the auditions, something that’s reserved for the most egregious cases. The company’s original 14 Dancers filed for Unionization at the end of April. An election was held on May 29th, resulting in a unanimous vote.
