Labor Day Message From National AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler

It’s Labor Day Weekend and millions of Working People around the country are preparing firing up the grill to do one last cookout before the end of Summer - but, as we all know, this day is about something much bigger than burgers and ball games.

Labor Day is our day.

At its core, this holiday is about celebrating the people who are responsible for every function of our society: Workers.

It’s a yearly opportunity for Working People to remind ourselves that it’s our labor that powers every facet of this country and our labor that creates all the wealth generated in the economy.

Additionally, Labor Day provides a moment to reflect on the crucial rights fought for - and won - by this movement: Protections such as the eight-hour workday: Child Labor Laws; Lunch breaks; Overtime pay; Paid Leave; and so much more.

All delivered by generations of Union Members who bravely stood up to powerful interests so that the lives of all Workers might be better.

And its Unions that have continued to set industry standards time and time again, raising the bar for Worker pay and benefits, workplace safety and respect on the job.

It’s no wonder why a new Gallup survey shows that Americans’ approval of Labor Unions is near its highest level since the 1960s.

More and more Working People - especially young Workers - are recognizing that the promises of trickle-down economics and financial deregulation were shameless lies sold to us by the ultra-rich.

The Labor Movement is ready to capture that frustration and turn it into landslide election victories, historic contracts and life-long benefits.

So, this weekend, head out to a local labor event and post about the value of Unions on Social Media.

And volunteer to help elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

Let’s continue to build our movement so that Labor Day is something to truly celebrate - not just this year, but every year!

It is disappointing to read President Shuler's message and not see any mention of the problem of foreign steel imports flooding our Nation and destroying steel and steel related U.S. jobs in mining, shipping, railroad transport and fabrication. EU and Chinese-made Steel Tariffs are just plain too low to protect American Workers and American Industry from unfair and predatory foreign competition. In our own WNY area we have seen a major NYSDOT bridge project - the pedestrian bridge over the I-190 at LaSalle Park, use Italian instead of U.S.-made steel. By the way, steel for that project should have purchased from U.S. Steel made at the Mon Valley Works in Pennsylvania. No excuses -the AFL CIO needs to focus on unfair predatory foreign competition that is stealing American jobs - Craig E.
