Café Cerés Baristas In Minneapolis ‘Go Union’ With UNITE HERE
An overwhelming majority of Café Cerés Baristas have voted to join UNITE HERE Local 17, showing powerful unity in the face of a persistent Anti-Union Campaign by their employer. About 30 Baristas work at the four Café Cerés locations across Minneapolis, which are part of Chef Daniel del Prado’s DDP Restaurant Group. Members called on the parent company to voluntarily recognize the Union and begin negotiating a contract. Staff is getting ready to bargain over a number of issues, ranging from respect on the job, higher pay and better benefits. “I feel really proud,” said Lead Barista Mariam Karkache in a UNITE HERE press release. “For too long my work has been dismissed as unskilled and baristas like me disrespected and undervalued - but I’ve found the path to get the dignity and stable career I’ve always deserved - and that’s through a Union. I hope this sends a message to other service and restaurant workers in the Twin Cities and beyond about what we all deserve.”
