Several Union Laborers Arrested During Rally Held By Local 78 & 79 In Brooklyn To Focus A Spotlight On The Use Of A Notorious Demolition Firm
(BROOKLYN, NEW YORK) – Several Union Laborers were arrested during a rally held by Locals 78 and 79 late last week that called attention to the use of a notorious demolition firm used by a luxury residential developer.
The Chief Leader reported hundreds of Union Laborers held a boisterous afternoon rally on Thursday (August 1st) in the Flatiron District to hammer a luxury residential developer’s use of Alba Services - a notorious demolition firm.
Laborers' Local 79 and Local 78 workers gathered in the high heat and humidity on the sidewalk just north of Madison Square Park facing the boutique building owned by Rockrose Development to denounce the firm’s use of Alba Services on the redevelopment project at St. Francis College in Brooklyn.
“We’re demanding Rockrose sever ties with Alba immediately and only hire responsible demolition contractors. Workers and communities deserve much better than the harm Alba causes,” Local 79 Organizing Director Oona Adams said.
Several Construction Workers were arrested that also drew Immigrant Demolition Workers, who joined the call with Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine for Rockrose to sever ties with Alba Services on their project.
Alba Services has a track record of oppressing Immigrant Construction Workers, Union Officials said.
Those arrested were later released.
