Unionization Petitions ‘Are Up 30% in 2024’ in Wake of Cemex Decision
Workers are filing petitions to hold Union Elections and winning them at increasingly higher rates, according to data released by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
This uptick is in part a result of the NLRB's adoption of Pro-Worker policies during the Biden Administration.
The NLRB so far has received more than 2,600 Union Election Petitions in fiscal year 2024 -30% more than filed in all of Fiscal Year 2023.
The increases largely were driven by a 2,000% surge in the number of employer-filed petitions after the NLRB’s decision in Cemex Construction Materials Pacific, LLC.
This rule requires employers either voluntarily recognize a Union or file an election petition when Unions come to them with proof of majority employee support, strengthening Workers’ right to bargain and improving the fairness and integrity of NLRB-conducted elections.
Additionally, Unions are winning more elections - 79% this year in cases where they petitioned for an election, up from 76% last year, according to the NLRB.
