Salt Lake Tribune Journalists Announce Plans To ‘Go Union’
(SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH) - Journalists employed at Utah’s Salt Lake Tribune have announced they are forming a Union to ensure The Tribune remains Utah’s independent voice.
In a mission statement announcing the Union - the Salt Lake News Guild, Journalists note ensuring a workplace with fair wages and working conditions will allow Workers a voice in the future of their non-profit newsroom: “We believe The Tribune’s own mission is bolstered by a represented workforce, pioneering labor standards, equitable pay, adherence to the ethics of journalism and transparency imparted to Employees and readers. We seek a seat at the table where decisions are made and a role in guiding our non-profit journey. The Salt Lake News Guild looks forward to working with Tribune management to forge our shared path toward a sustainable future.”
The Salt Lake News Guild sent a letter to Salt Lake Tribune management and the newspaper’s Board of Directors demanding voluntary recognition no later than Friday, July 19th (2024).
“Unionizing the workforce aligns with The Tribune’s non-profit mission,” the letter reads. “It reinforces our shared commitment to Democracy, transparency and accountability. It helps create a strong foundation as we navigate an ever-changing media environment.”
