The International Longshoremen’s Association - The Biggest U.S. Ports Union, ‘Suspends’ Labor Talks With East Coast, Gulf Coast ‘Strike Risk Rising’
Lori Ann LaRocco at CNBC.com reports critical talks between the Union and management for East Coast and Gulf Coast ports have broken down over allegations made by the International Longshoremen’s Association that Maersk is using automation to displace Workers. Unlike the West Coast ports, East Coast ports have a history of resolving labor issues and hammering out new contracts ahead of a port work shutdown, with the last Strike in 1977. Port labor battles in the U.S. and around the world have intensified since the Coronavirus Pandemic and amid high inflation and as automation has become a more prominent issue, with a potential Strike looming in the Fall.
