‘Training The Next Generation’ Of Fishermen In Bristol Bay

Alaska-Native-News.com reports the Alaska Sea Grant and Bristol Bay Regional Career and Technical Education (BBRCTE) have teamed up to lead a new two-week hands-on Training Program for high school-aged prospective Commercial Fishers.  The Commercial Fishing Vessel Services and Maintenance Intensive Training Program was informed by the Food from the Sea Project - a needs assessment conducted in 2021–2022, showing that for new Commercial Fishers, the most important training needs were in the areas of safety, vessel maintenance and repair, and Crew/Deckhand skills. Students are able to earn up to four college credits for completing the training.
