The Texas Labor Movement ‘Mobilizes’ To Help With Houston Disaster Relief

(HOUSTON, TEXAS) - After a powerful wind storm hit the Houston area, the Texas Labor Movement quickly mobilized to help affected residents and disperse critical resources to those in need.

In the wake of this devastating disaster, there has been widespread power loss - as heat indexes in the region approach 100 degrees - as well as fatalities reported and continuous flooding.

The Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation (TGCALF) put out a call for Members and volunteers to assist residents to clear trees and debris from destroyed buildings, deliver water, and circulate information about available relief resources.

Earlier this week, volunteers from Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 10, Ironworkers Local 84, United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA) Local 68, UA Local 211, Heat and Frost Insulators (HFIU) Local 22, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 716, International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) Local 54, International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 51 and International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) Local 31 gathered at the Labor Council’s Office to assist with the Harris County cleanup efforts.

The TGCALF is continuing to help families in the impacted area as resources become available.
