Unionized House Cafeteria Workers ‘Get Better Pay & Protections Under New Contract’
Justin Papp at Roll Call reports on a new contract benefitting House cafeteria workers who are represented by Unite Here Local 23 that raises wages and improves working conditions. Notable in the new contract, which applies to around 100 House Cafeteria Workers, is a $3 hourly pay bump in the first year and a raise of $7.50 over five years. By the end of the contract term, the lowest starting non-tipped wage will be $24.15 an hour. “Even in D.C. that’s still not enough, as far as the cost of living, but what’s really important to our folks is that they’ll get free health insurance for the first time. That’s huge,” Local 23 President Marlene Patrick-Cooper said.
