The USPS ‘Will Maintain’ Operations At Buffalo Facility ‘After Proposed Move To Rochester’ - NALC Branch 3 President Thanks U.S. Senator Schumer For Role He Played
(BUFFALO, NEW YORK) - The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced it will maintain business as usual at its William Street facility in Buffalo after a proposal that would have moved operations at the center to Rochester.
The USPS said in a statement that after the finalization of a Mail Processing Facility Review, “There will be no changes at the Buffalo facility. Business mail entry, Post Office, station, branch retail services and delivery services will remain unchanged.”
The proposal to move, and later consolidate, operations to Rochester was met with stark opposition from Union-represented Postal Workers, as well as Local and State Elected Leaders.
The USPS held a public meeting in February regarding the potential move, but Workers and Community Residents turned out in force to argue against it.
The USPS William Street Facility processes 30,000 letters per hour and the proposed move was said to have caused delays to mail across Western New York.
Additionally, hundreds of Employees faced the threat of relocation to Rochester.
National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 3 President David Grosskopf, Jr. released the following statement:
On behalf of the Letter Carriers of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 3 Buffalo/Western New York, we wholeheartedly thank U.S. Senator Schumer for his tireless efforts in preventing the rolling back of services and capabilities of the William Street Post Office.
His staunch support and advocacy have ensured that this essential hub remains open, allowing us to continue providing reliable mail delivery services to the residents of Buffalo.
The potential change threatened not only our jobs, but also the vital link between William Street and the Nation's Postal Network.
Thanks to his decisive action, our ability to execute our duties as Letter Carriers remains intact.
We are grateful for the Senator’s commitment to preserving the United States Postal Service and safeguarding the livelihoods of its dedicated workforce here in Western New York.
