Staffers At The Marshall Project, A Pulitzer-Winning Criminal Justice Non-Profit Newsroom, ‘Announce Their Intent to Form A Union’

(NEW YORK CITY) - Staffers at the Criminal Justice Journalism Non-Profit The Marshall Project announced Thursday that they are forming a Union with The NewsGuild of New York, an affiliate of the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

The Marshall Project is named after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who championed Organized Labor throughout his career as a Lawyer and Jurist.

This Unionization effort is the latest in a wave of non-profit news organizations around the country that have joined The NewsGuild-CWA - campaigns that have inspired The Marshall Project Guild to take action.

Workers said that the organizing effort is spurred by a desire to codify the things they love about working at the Marshall Project, including positive working conditions, consistent expectations, fair compensation and due process for all Employees - particularly as the larger Journalism Industry faces Union-Busting and layoffs.

“I think it’s ultimately an act of deep caring and deep respect for each other and for the organization,” said Anna Flagg, a Senior Data Reporter at the Marshall Project since 2016.

“It’s a common misconception that Unionizing has to be inherently negative.  What we want to do is preserve the best things about working for the Marshall Project, protect those things and put in place new improvements going forward,” she said.
