Memorial Unveiled At Site Of Deadly 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire In New York City

A long-awaited memorial at the site of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in Greenwich Village was officially dedicated on Wednesday (September 11th), honoring the victims of the tragedy that ignited the U.S. Labor Movement's fight for Workplace Safety.  In a post that appeared on the New York City AFL-CIO Central Labor Council’s web site, Anne Trasciatti who serves as President of the Triangle Fire Coalition, said: “This beautiful memorial will help us remember the Workers who lost their lives because of employers’ greed, shining a light on this dark history and reminding us of the need for collective action.  Outrage in the aftermath of the tragedy changed Labor and Fire Safety Laws and these changes continue to protect us more than one hundred years later.  We are honored to partner with New York University and to have gotten so much support from the Labor Movement and others in the community for this project.”  On March 25th, 1911, Triangle Waist Company Textile Workers were trapped when a fire broke out at a clothing factory on the upper floors of the building.  The victims, 146 mostly Jewish and Italian Women and Girls, were unable to escape the flames, with some leaping from windows to their deaths, and others falling from a collapsed fire escape in front of horrified witness on the street.  Many, though, were found dead behind a locked door that prevented their escape.  Although Firefighters responded to the scene, their ladders were unable to reach the fire on the eighth, ninth and tenth floors of the building.  The factory's owners were put on trial after the fire and said the door had been purposely locked to deter theft.
