Under sunny skies and very warm temperatures, the 2023 Western New York Construction Career Days Event was held at the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 17’s sprawling 400-acre Training Center in Lakeview, just south of Buffalo, over a two-day period this week. 

More than 1,000 high school students from across the region were expected to participate in the hands-on event, which included a number of virtual experiences, as well as welding, running small machinery and operating extremely large cranes.  

To WNYLaborToday.com’s great surprise, a great number of students who participated in Day One of the event on Wednesday (October 4th) were young Women. 

With an array of construction projects slated to occur across Western New York in the years to come, there will be many employment opportunities in the Unionized Trades, which has many Buffalo Building & Construction Trades Labor Leaders hoping this event will create a great amount of interest in pursuing such a career path in the years to come.
