Republic Steel Announces It Will Idle Mills In Lackawanna, NY & Canton, Ohio That ‘Negatively Impacts’ 500 Workers, ‘Drawing The Ire’ Of The United Steelworkers - ‘To Make Matters Worse,’ Company Also Announces Plan To Move The Work To Mexico

WKYC.com reports Republic Steel has announced the company's Mexico-based owner will idle steelmaking operations at its mills in Canton, Ohio and in Lackawanna, New York, furloughing 500 Employees indefinitely - less than 200 from the Western New York Plant, with the rest in Canton.  Operations are now moving to Mexico, the company said.  "They want to run to Mexico now because they can make the same thing that we're making and they don't have to pay the wage and they don't have the insurance and cheap labor, and they can hire someone they don't like and they can fire them because they don't have a Union over there," USW Local 1200 President Todd Fitzgibbon said.

High tariffs need to be imposed on all steel products made by Republic Steel and imported from Mexico until these two Unionized Steel Plants are placed back into operation. Outsourcing of steel production for foreign corporations should never be tolerated. Shifting production to low wage, no pension, no health and safety and no environmental protection nations should never be allowed by Federal government Officials. This is exactly why NAFTA was opposed by the American Union Movement in the 1990s! As a former Steelworker at the Bethlehem Steel plant in Lackawanna, New York - I know how important American steel jobs are to the economy of the Great Lakes Region - manufacturing, transportation, mining, sub-contracting. We need to be aggressive in protecting American jobs. Contact your Member of Congress today! - Craig E.
