From Vilda Vera Mayuga Is Commissioner Of New York City’s Department Of Consumer And Worker Protection Who Has An Important Message For Workers: The COVID-19 Emergency ‘Might Be Over, But Your Right To Take Paid Safe And Sick Leave Is Not’

Vilda Vera Mayuga seves as Commissioner for New York City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP).  She tells LaborPress that while the COVID-19 emergency might be over, a Worker’s right to take Paid Safe and Sick Leave is not.  Under New York City’s Paid Safe and Sick Leave Law, covered Workers have the right to use Safe and Sick Leave to take care of themselves or a family member, or to seek legal and social services assistance if they or a family member may be the victim of any act or threat of domestic violence or unwanted sexual contact, stalking or human trafficking.  Since the Paid Safe and Sick Leave Law went into effect in April 2014, DCWP has closed more than 2,500 investigations and obtained resolutions requiring nearly $21 million in combined fines and restitution for more than 60,000 Workers.
