Remedy House Coffee Bar Workers ‘Win Voluntary Recognition’ Of Their Union

(BUFFALO, NEW YORK) – Earlier this week, Workers at the Remedy House in Buffalo presented a list of demands to management and announced their intention to Unionize with Workers United Rochester Regional Joint Board (RRJB).

Management at the Remedy House – a coffee bar located in Buffalo's Five Points neighborhood, then immediately fired Meghan Sullivan, the lead Worker Organizer of the campaign.

In response, the Remedy House Workers walked off the job and began an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) Strike.

After less than 24 hours on Strike, Remedy House management conceded to the Worker’s demands and voluntarily recognized the Union.

As such, Remedy House Workers are officially recognized as a Union and Workers will now begin contract negotiations with their employer.

Remedy House Worker Lia Sitrin said: “This is just the start for us.  We hope this next chapter provides opportunities to continue learning and growing as we move towards our goal for reclaiming the ‘Remedy House’ name as one that truly stands for the community.  If this experience has taught me anything, it’s the sheer power that a team, with the guts to have a voice and the strength to stand by it, can wield.”

Calene Leffler, another Worker at Remedy House, said: “I’m so proud of what my team has achieved.  This is an incredible success but we have more work to do.  We’ll be keeping our incredibly supportive community updated as much as we can, we’re ready to start serving your coffee and negotiating our contract terms!”

Workers are still fighting for Meghan’s reinstatement and have filed an ULP charge with the National Labor Relations Board (Board).

Remedy House workers organized with RRJB, the same Union that Buffalo’s Spot Coffee, Starbucks, and Workers employed at Buffalo’s Lexington Co-Op organized with.
