IBEW Local ‘Partners With’ Michigan Energy Company To Train Prisoners To Trim Around Power Lines
Corey Williams at the Associated Press reports on International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 17 partnering with Detroit-based DTE Energy - one of Michigan’s largest electric utilities, on a tree-trimming program to improve the utility’s infrastructure. The AP reports that more than a dozen prisoners are learning how to climb trees and trim branches around power lines as part of DTE Energy’s $70 million plan to improve the utility’s electric infrastructure. Line Trimmers “are extremely in demand, right now,” IBEW Local 17 Business Manager James Shaw tells the AP. “As we start rebuilding the electrical infrastructure around the country, a lot of it is clearing the lines,” he said.
