“The Cause For Justice Finally Prevailed” - The New York State AFL-CIO ‘Praises’ State Labor Commissioner’s Approval Of 10-Year Phase-In To 40-Hour Farm Laborer Work Week
New York State AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento is praising State Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon’s issuance of an order to phase-in a 40-hour work week for Farm Laborers by 2032.
The Farm Laborers Wage Board in September, carrying out the details of a 2019 law, outlined a path that would reduce the hours - gradually, from the current 60-hour week.
The limit will be 56 hours a week beginning in January 2024, and then be reduced every two years until it reaches 40 hours on January 1st, 2032.
Farm Laborers can work more than the minimum of 40 hours a week, but Farm Owners must pay them overtime for it.
State AFL-CIO President Cilento said: “The New York State Commissioner of Labor issued the Overtime Wage Order which will put in motion the phased-in overtime threshold plan for Farm Workers. We thank Commissioner Roberta Reardon for accepting the recommendations of the Farm Laborers Wage Board. We also thank Governor (Kathy) Hochul for her support of Farm Workers and for recognizing the essential role they play in our everyday lives. The Union Movement has fought for more than twenty years striving for fairness, dignity and respect for Farm Workers. The cause for justice finally prevailed.”
