Another Victorious Union Member Running For Public Office: Binghamton Chapter United University Professions Member Lea Webb Won The Democratic Nomination For New York State Senate In The 52nd District
(BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK) – United University Professions (UUP) Binghamton Chapter member Lea Webb won the Democratic nomination for the New York State Senate in the 52nd District in the August 23rd primary.
Webb trounced her challenger, Leslie Danks Banks, winning 61.2% of the vote, according to Ballotpedia.com.
Banks won 38.7% of the vote, followed by write-in candidates, who got 1% of the vote.
If she wins in November, it would elevate Webb to status as a state senator.
UUP strongly supported Webb during her primary candidacy and will be backing her in her November 8th effort against Republican candidate Richard David.
There is no incumbent in the race.
State Senator Fred Akshar, who has held the seat since 2015, has chosen not to run for another two-year term.
Webb works as the Diversity Education Coordinator in Binghamton University’s UDiversity Educational Institute.
In her role, she develops diversity and inclusion training and programs for Faculty, Staff and students.
“As an Educator and UUP Member, she is dedicated to supporting Labor and Public Education,” UUP President Fred Kowal said in a July letter to UUP Members.
“Lea has a proven track record from her tenure on the Binghamton City Council, where she led the passage of legislation supporting equal pay for Women, the creation of the City’s Human Rights Commission and other equity-based legislation. She is a life-long Southern Tier resident who has dedicated herself to bettering her community,” Kowal said.
