Specialty Finishes Painters ‘Seal Victory’ In Portland, Oregon Union Election
(PORTLAND, OREGON) – Specialty Finishes Painters at the Vigor Swan Island Shipyard have won their Union Election with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 5/Painter’s Local 10.
The Painters won their election by a vote of 8-1.
Specialty Finishes has operated in Oregon and Washington for two decades, providing specialty coatings in the Maritime Industry.
This victory rewrites history as - once again, there is 100% Union Shipyard in Oregon.
The Crew of 16 Painters joins Local 10 in their effort for a fair days pay for a fair days work.
When asked about the benefits of becoming Union Members, Specialty Finishes Painter David Warnieke agreed that this will be a leap forward for the he and his fellow Painters, saying: “A little bit of a wage increase, family medical coverage, which is huge, and having the protection of the Union - having an advocate.”
“We are extremely proud to welcome the Workers of Specialty Finishes Swan Island into our Union to join the movement for family wages and benefits. This is a huge step forward for the ship repair industry and shows that Portland is a Union Town,” IUPAT Labor Representative Scott Oldham said.
