Tentative Contract Agreement Reached - SEIU Local 200-Represented Adjunct Faculty Strike At Mercy College ‘Averted’

(DOBBS FERRY, NEW YORK) – A threatened Strike by Adjunct Faculty at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry has been averted as the Members of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 200’s Bargaining Team have come to an agreement with the school administration, the Union announced late last week.

The Rank-and-File Membership had authorized a Strike for Monday (May 2nd) had no agreement been reached and that would have impacted campuses in Dobbs Ferry, the Bronx and Manhattan.

The new contract includes a pay increase, tuition remission for families, a longevity and signing bonus and more stability for Adjunct Faculty, who team on a course-by-course basis.

Union Membership must now approve the contract, the first for the union at Mercy.  A Membership vote will be conducted by secret ballot.

The Adjunct Faculty’s Union Bargaining Committee issued the following statement: “We are pleased to announce we’ve reached a tentative agreement with the Mercy College Administration for our first Union contract.  Therefore there will be no Strike on Monday.  The tentative agreement, which is subject to final approval by the Members in a vote by secret ballot, includes a pay increase, tuition remission for families, a longevity and signing bonus and more stability for adjunct faculty who teach on a course by course basis.  We want to express our deep appreciation to all the Adjunct Faculty that have stood strong for more than two years and the students and community allies that have brought us to this day.  Truly, we are stronger together.”

Jenn Puja, who serves as Labor Council Director for the Westchester/Putnam AFL-CIO Central Labor Body (WPCLB), said: “The WPCLB AFL-CIO is thrilled to hear about a tentative agreement reached with Mercy College Adjuncts and SEIU Local 200 United.  Local 200 United is our newest affiliate and on behalf of our 100,000 Public and Private Sector Union Members, we congratulate our new Labor Family Members on their Strike aversion.  Solidarity is a verb!”
