Pre-Apprenticeship Program ‘Launched To Help Aspiring’ Diversified Vegetable Farmers

(THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA) - Pasa Sustainable Agriculture is rolling out a Pre-Apprenticeship Program to provide introductory hands-on training for people who want to explore diversified Vegetable Farming as a career.

The program, which was formally registered with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry in early 2021, offers a structured curriculum.

Pre-Apprentices must commit to completing 225 hours of on-the-job training with one of the program’s host sites, but no prior farming experience is required to participate.

Grow Pittsburgh’s Urban Farmers in Training Program and the LEAF Project in Central Pennsylvania participated in the Pre-Apprenticeship curriculum development and will also pilot the program as host sites managing recruitment, training and supervision of Pre-Apprentices.

Pasa expects approximately 70 participants in the pilot season and hopes to grow this number in coming years by partnering with more Farmer Training Programs.

Pre-Apprentices must be at least 14 years old.

There is no upper age limit.

The program is designed as a natural lead-in to Pasa’s existing, and more intensive, Diversified Vegetable Apprenticeship.
