(BUFFALO, NEW YORK) – During this Holiday Season and as 2020 comes to a welcomed end, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York (BCBSWNY) is taking the time to reinforce its commitment to its members, the community and to Organized Labor:
BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York (BCBSWNY) has proudly served the unique health care needs of its members, Employees and community through its 85-year history.
The circumstances of 2020 have catapulted BlueCross BlueShield into an expanded role as a community-based, not-for-profit health plan.
Beyond providing health care coverage to its million members, the local health plan has pivoted its efforts to provide enhanced support to every corner of Western New York in response to the pandemic.
Along with other local employers and foundations, BlueCross BlueShield contributed $1 million to the Western New York COVID-19 Community Response Fund to help organizations that are addressing immediate needs in our community as a result of the crisis in the areas of food, housing, health care, childcare, mental health, transportation and other emergency services.
“We understand the significant impact that the health care system, businesses and communities throughout the country continue to face as a result of the ongoing pandemic,” said David W. Anderson, President and CEO, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York. “Like our local Labor Unions, BlueCross BlueShield has a long-standing commitment of protecting those who count on us every day. We are here for our members and community, and know that by working together, we will help Western New York recover and rebuild for a stronger tomorrow.”
As the only locally based health plan with a Unionized Workforce, BlueCross BlueShield also donated healthy snack-packs and meals to 1,500 Western New York Heroes, on behalf of their 1,500 Employees - a symbolic effort to support the dedicated individuals who are on the frontlines serving our community during the pandemic.
The City of Buffalo Police Department and The City of Buffalo Firefighters were just a few of the organizations who received deliveries.
BlueCross BlueShield Employees also collected 10 tons of the most-needed items for FeedMore WNY and donated $80,000 to 16 local non-profits.
Most recently, BlueCross BlueShield partnered with The National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres to distribute 10,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to local Teachers and students as they return to their classrooms.
And, BlueCross BlueShield also partnered with the Ralph C. Wilson Jr., Foundation to distribute to 14,000 Physical Education PlayPacks to Buffalo Public School students to continue their physical education in their remote school settings.
