1199 SEIU-Represented Health Care Workers Employed At Kenmore Nursing Residence Ratify New Agreement That Includes ‘Highest Start Rates In The Buffalo Area’

(KENMORE, NEW YORK) – 1199 Service Employees International Union (SEIU) United Healthcare Workers East-represented Workers at the Schofield Residence in Kenmore have overwhelmingly voted to approve a new one-year contract that includes significantly higher start rates, wage increases and provisions to help attract new Employees.

1199 SEIU represents 100 workers at the Kenmore Nursing Facilities, including Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Dietary, Housekeeping and Environmental Service Aides.

Senior Employees with more than five years of service will receive a Minimum Wage increase of 3.5%, Union Officials said.  Others will receive a 2% increase.

In addition to general wage increases, the new hire start rates will be some of the highest of any nursing home across Western New York.

“This is ‘probably the biggest wage increase that we have had since I've been here’,” said Jennifer Sicignano, an LPN who’s worked at Schofield for more than seven years.

Employees who do not need health insurance or who are willing to take less paid time off now will receive a higher hourly wage rate, 1199 SEIU Representatives said.

Also, 1199 SEIU Union Members from other facilities will now have an opportunity to be hired at Schofield at their current wage rate, rather than the start rate.

An 1199 SEIU Member working as a CNA in another Union-represented facility earning $17.50 an hour, for example, can keep that hourly rate when hired by Schofield.

“This contract ‘offers a new model’ for Union nursing home jobs in our area ‘and should help attract and retain experienced Unionized Nursing Staff at Schofield,’” 1199 SEIU Vice-President Todd Hobler said.

Added Sicignano: “This contract ‘is going to help with staffing.’  ‘It is a good agreement for everyone.’”

With more than Caregivers, 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is the largest and fastest-growing Health Care Union in America - representing Workers in five states, including Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida and the District of Columbia.
