1199 SEIU-Represented Workers Employed At The Our Lady Of Peace Nursing Home In Niagara County Ratify A New 16-Month Contract That Includes A 4% Wage Increase

(NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK) – 1199 Service Employees International Union (SEIU)-represented Workers employed at the Our Lady of Peace Nursing Home in Lewiston have ratified a new 16-month agreement that includes a 4% wage increase, Union Officials announced.

The new contract runs until the end of 2021.

The Unionized Nursing Home Workers won a 4% general wage increase over an 11-month period of the contract, 1199 SEIU Officials said, which is in addition to a one-time $600 COVID-19 Appreciation Bonus that the Health Care Workers Union fought for in the early stages of the pandemic.

The 16-month contract also includes higher starting rates for Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs), who will start at $14 per hour by next July, 1199 SEIU Officials said.

The Unionized Workers also maintained their current health benefits, paid time off and pension contributions - in addition to the general wage increase they won.

“We’re ‘glad’ Our Lady of Peace came to the negotiations table ‘ready to show appreciation for Essential Workers who have been on the front lines.’  ‘We’ve all been struggling with the safety of our residents, our families, and ourselves and this is one of the best wage packages I’ve seen in my seventeen years negotiating contracts,’” says CNA Yedda Burton, who serves as a Chief 1199 SEIU Delegate.

The Our Lady of Peace Nursing Home Workers are essential in the fight against COVID-19, the Union Workers said.

“Securing a ‘good wage increase for Union Workers will help many of us who have been struggling throughout this pandemic.’  ‘I’m grateful I am in a Union because a lot of people in Non-Union homes are facing wage freezes or other cuts right now, which only drives people away from the industry and makes staffing worse,’” Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Krista Diez said.

1199 SEIU represents 250 Unionized Health Care Workers at Our Lady of Peace in Niagara County - who are employed as Registered Nurses (RNs), CNAs, LPNs, Housekeepers, Laundry Aides, Maintenance Technicians, Dietary Workers and those who work in the Activities Department.

With more than 450,000 Caregivers, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is the largest and fastest-growing Health Care Union in America – representing Workers in five states, including Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida and the District of Columbia.
