Principals Union’s Members Rally Outside New York City Hall To Demand New Contract

(NEW YORK CITY) - They’re standing on principal.

Hundreds of City School Administrators, fed up with working without a contract since April, rallied outside New York City Hall on Wednesday (October 30th) to demand a new pact, a boost in school funding, expanded parental leave - and more independent decision-making for Principals.

“Our Members should not have had to return to school without a contract,” said Principals Union President Mark Cannizzaro of the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators. “We demand that the city show our Members the same commitment that our Members show the city’s children every day.”

Reginald Landeau Jr., Principal of Middle School 216 in Queens, decried working conditions that “keep us out of classrooms, which negatively impacts Teachers, students, and the school communities we serve."

The Union has lodged several recent complaints about Education Department initiatives that it says places unfair responsibilities on Principals.

According to Union Officials, they’ve also been shut out of negotiations over a new collaboration between the Education Department and Teachers Union that offers financial bonuses for hard-to-staff teaching positions.

And they complain that recent changes to city guidelines gives Principals the responsibility of conducting investigations of sexual assault allegations in and outside of city schools - a task Union Leaders point out is better left to lawyers.

Union Leaders also are pushing for extended parental leave and increased school funding as part of the contract negotiations.
