In late 2008, General Motors (GM) was in bad financial shape, to say the least.

Poised to run out of cash by mid-2009, the company asked Congress for help - but it declined to act.

Then-President George Bush, however, stepped in with a government “bridge loan” of $17.4 billion.

President Barak Obama followed suit in 2009, approving billions more for the company. 

Since then, GM has closed 13 plants in the United States (and two Canada), affecting tens of thousands of Workers directly and many more down the supply chain.

And GM announced last week that it will close five more in 2019.

In contrast, GM’s Plants in Mexico, where Workers are paid much less than their American and Canadian counterparts, have been spared by GM.

All five plants continue their operations - uninterrupted.

Below is the list of the 13 GM plants in the U.S. and two in Canada that have been idled since the company was bailed out in December of 2008. Also included are the five plant closings scheduled for 2019: Lordstown Assembly, Ohio (2019); Oshawa Assembly, Ontario/Canada (2019); Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly, Michigan (2019); Baltimore Operations, Maryland (2019); Warren Transmission Operations, Michigan (2019); Grand Blanc Metal Center, Grand Blanc, Michigan (2013); Shreveport Operations, Louisiana (2012); Indianapolis Metal Center, Indiana (2011); Flint North Components, Michigan (2010); GMPT Fredericksburg, Maryland (2010); Livonia Engine, Michigan (2010); Mansfield-Ontario Metal Center, Ohio (2010); Willow Run Transmission, Michigan (2010); Windsor Transmission, Ontario/Canada (2010); Grand Rapids Metal Center, Michigan (2009); Janesville Assembly Plant, Wisconsin (2009); Massena Castings Plant, New York (2009); Oshawa Truck Assembly, Ontario/Canada (2009); Pontiac East Assembly, Michigan (2009); and Wilmington Assembly, Delaware (2009).
