CSEA President Danny Donohue Applauds Governor Cuomo’s ‘Tough Stance’ After A Paintball Attack On Two Department Of Transportation Workers In Buffalo

(BUFFALO, NEW YORK) – Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) Statewide President Danny Donohue is applauding Governor Andrew Cuomo’s tough stance on a paintball attack that occurred on two New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Workers in the City of Buffalo.

According to a story that appeared in The Buffalo News, two Highway Workers were shot in the back with paintballs on Friday (July 20th) on the Kensington Expressway, sparking outrage from Cuomo, who called what happened an "assault."  The incident happened at 8 a.m. on an Olympic Avenue overpass and involved two members of the state Department of Transportation Bridge Crew, DOT Spokesman Susan Surdej told the newspaper: "The car pulled within six feet of the Workers and four to five paintball shots were fired from the vehicle before it sped away.”

In a released statement, CSEA President Donohue said: “CSEA applauds Governor Cuomo’s tough stance on the shameless attacks on DOT Workers just trying to keep our roadways safe by doing their jobs.  The Governor recognizes these hard-working New Yorkers are in enough danger every day without having the added threat of getting hit with paintballs by cowards driving past them.  Paintball wars are dangerous and have no place on our roadways.  CSEA fully supports Governor Cuomo’s efforts to protect all our Public Sector Workers.  It’s important to recognize the vital role they play in our lives and communities every day and they deserve to do their work as safely as possible.”

The Governor said State Police are working with Buffalo Law Enforcement to identify the perpetrators and take appropriate action, The News also reported.

"While we are fortunate that neither was seriously harmed, I am disgusted by this flagrant show of disrespect toward our Workers and disregard for their safety," Cuomo said in a statement. "The men and women of the Department of Transportation work tirelessly every day to keep New Yorkers on the move and they deserve our admiration and respect."
