Long-Time Labor Leader Hobie Rhinehart

Posted by: Tom Campbell on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 12:00:00 am

Former Cattaraugus-Allegany AFL-CIO Central Labor Council President Hobart “Hobie” McKay Rhinehart, who captained the Southern Tier Labor Council for 15 years, has passed at the age of 83.

He is being remembered by a number of regional Labor Leaders as not only a tenacious advocate for ordinary Working People, but one who will be sorely missed by the entire Western New York Labor Movement.

WNYLaborToday.com asks that if you knew Hobie, and would like to comment on his passing and/or stellar career standing up for the rights of Working People, that you do it here.

Thank You for your in-put and comments.

They are appreciated.

Well put, Kendra. Hobie married my cousin, Audrey, and although I've taught in Arizona for many years, I spent many summer vacations with them and attended the Union activities. He was a special person and will be missed by many.

I have been lucky enough to know Hobie and his wife, Audrey, since I have been a Union Member. As well as being a warm, intelligent, kind person, he was a true example of what a Union Member 'should' be. I remember one time when he was the only person I saw walking an informational picket line protesting the use of non-Union Labor to construct a building in Jamestown! It was a nasty day outside, too! He will be sorely missed by those he helped and those that love him. I know God is probably telling him to relax and enjoy himself, but Hobie is probably looking for some one or thing to organize or maybe offering to be God's right-hand man <grin> to make people's lives better here on earth.
